Prayer Leadership Certificate

A deeper study of prayer for ministry application

Prayer Leadership Certificate

As part of our Lifelong Ministry Program, the College of Athens offers a Certificate Program in Prayer Leadership to equip believers to be powerful change agents for God’s Kingdom through prayer and prayer ministry. The Prayer Leadership Certificate program provides both heart-deep biblical knowledge about the practice of prayer combined with abundant hands-on, mentored experience leading prayer and prayer ministry.

Certificate in Prayer Leadership will equip individuals to work effectively within their churches and personal circles of influence by leading effective intercessory prayer and ministering to hurting individuals through transformational prayer ministry.

Program Graduates Will:

  • Demonstrate and apply a biblical understanding of prayer to their personal spiritual lives
  • Discern God’s will through prayer and His Word
  • Intercede for others with authority according to God’s will
  • Pray effectively with others to overcome personal struggles and heart issues

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  –Romans 12:2

The program consists of 6 courses listed below. Participants typically enroll in two courses per semester for a total of three 15-week terms, but the schedule can be tailored to meet the individual student’s scheduling needs. Every course builds on the knowledge and understanding from the previous coursework to result in Prayer Leaders who are equipped for effective Kingdom service. The “Application & Apprenticeship” courses must be taken after completing other coursework. All CoA courses are taught by credentialed, experienced faculty who serve in frontline ministry.

Intercession & Warfare

I. Prayer & Spiritual Direction. The course examines the Christian practice of prayer through biblical and theological lenses, types of prayer (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication) and introduces students to the theology and practice of hearing God and discerning His will. Students will consider their personal prayer practices and apply personal prayer tools through collaborative learning, individual assessment, and class discussion with an emphasis on application.

II. Spiritual Warfare & Victory in Christ. Students will demonstrate an understanding of their identity and destiny as the children of God and synthesize the principles of the Kingdom of heaven into their daily life, which include living victoriously in the midst of the spiritual battle that exists on the earth. Students will also learn and apply the principles of effective intercessory prayer according to the authority of the believer.

Prayer Ministry for Inner Healing

III. & IV. Effective Prayer Ministry Tools. Students will learn and apply basic and advanced tools for engaging in effective prayer ministry to others. Two courses are required. Courses and methodologies vary by semester. Students may choose from a number of Prayer Ministry methods offered at CoA as well as Coaching 4 Christlikeness for one of the two courses.

V.  Wholeness Care Ministry. In this course, participants will learn and apply key strategies for offering prayer ministry to recipients who may not yet have a personal relationship with Christ.  Participants will also understand and apply biblical principles for physical healing and how to effectively incorporate those into a successful ministry session as well as explore the connections between body, soul, and spirit.  Basic interviewing and coaching skills are also included in this course.

Application & Apprenticeship

Note: In addition to the formal Apprenticeship course below, students will receive Prayer Ministry at least twice during the first semester, and serve as Prayer Ministry session support at least once per month during the second semester.
VI. Prayer Ministry Apprenticeship. As a capstone practicum, students will serve 3 hours per week in the CoA Prayer Ministry Center as lead Prayer Ministers serving hurting individuals through transformational prayer while concurrently enrolled in The Practice of Prayer course. Note: The Certificate in Prayer Leadership Program does not provide students with traditional “college credits.” Students wishing for an even deeper and more formal background in ministering to others through prayer may want to consider our certificate, undergraduate, and graduate programs in Christian Ministry with a concentration in Care & Counseling
